Hooghly, 04 June (H.S.): Former West Bengal Transport Minister and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Snehasish Chakraborty has announced his retirement from active politics.
Speaking at his residence in Kanaipur, Konnagar, in Hooghly district on Thursday, Chakraborty said he no longer wishes to return to active political life.
He clarified that he would not be associated with any political party in the future. However, he added that he intends to remain engaged in public discourse through writing, political analysis, and by expressing his views on various social issues.
Chakraborty had contested the recent Assembly election from the Jangipara constituency in Hooghly district but suffered a narrow defeat to the BJP candidate. Following the election results, he largely disappeared from the political scene and was notably absent from several programmes and organizational activities convened by the Trinamool Congress leadership.
His prolonged silence had fueled speculation regarding his political future. Putting an end to those discussions, Chakraborty on Thursday publicly announced his decision to step away from active politics.
The former minister did not cite any political controversy or organizational differences behind his decision, describing it instead as a personal choice. He emphasized that while he is withdrawing from electoral and party politics, he will continue to contribute to public life through intellectual and social engagement.
His announcement marks the end of an active political career that saw him hold important responsibilities in the state government and remain a prominent figure in Hooghly district politics for several years.
