Shillong, 04 June (HS): Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday said that the continuous influx of displaced people from Myanmar has become a significant burden on the state, warning that more refugees may arrive in the coming months due to the ongoing political and security crisis in the neighbouring country.
Speaking to the media after a programme in Shillong, the Chief Minister said that the prevailing geopolitical situation in Myanmar has forced a large number of people to seek shelter in Mizoram. He noted that many displaced persons are currently entering the state and expressed concern that additional refugees may cross the border in search of safety.
Mizoram shares an open international border with Myanmar and communities on both sides have long-standing ethnic and cultural ties. Following the outbreak of political instability and armed conflict in Myanmar, thousands of people have crossed into Mizoram seeking refuge.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come at a time when the state continues to face humanitarian, administrative and financial challenges arising from the refugee situation. According to the state government, the growing number of displaced persons has placed increasing pressure on local resources, infrastructure and public welfare services.
Despite these challenges, the Mizoram government has continued to provide shelter and humanitarian assistance to people fleeing Myanmar. The state maintains that helping the displaced is necessary, given the deep historical and cultural connections shared by communities across the border.
Following Lalduhoma’s statement, demands for additional support from the Central Government and a coordinated strategy to address the refugee crisis are likely to gain renewed attention. Experts believe that unless the situation in Myanmar improves soon, the pressure on Mizoram could increase further in the coming months.-----------
