Three Organisers of Humayun Kabir's Meeting Arrested; Police Action Follows CM's Warning

Kolkata, June 30 (HS): Police have arrested three organisers of a public meeting addressed by Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief and Naoda MLA Humayun Kabir in connection with his alleged controversial and inflammatory remarks, officials said on Tuesday.

The arrests came within hours of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's warning in the Assembly that action would first be taken against those who had organised the meeting, followed by legal proceedings against the MLA in accordance with the law.

The arrested persons have been identified as Golam Mustafa, Mohammad Aminul Haque and Anisur Rahman. Police detained them during separate operations on Monday night.

The controversy stems from speeches delivered by Humayun Kabir at public meetings held recently in Rejinagar and Shaktipur in Murshidabad district. Two separate FIRs were registered at the Rejinagar and Shaktipur police stations alleging that the MLA had made provocative remarks during the meetings.

Acting on the FIR registered at Rejinagar police station, police arrested Golam Mustafa and Mohammad Aminul Haque. Mustafa is stated to be the president of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party's Kashipur-II unit.

In a separate action, Shaktipur police arrested Anisur Rahman, the party's coordinator for Beldanga-II block.

According to police sources, Aminul Haque is a resident of Loknathpur village in Rejinagar, while Golam Mustafa belongs to the Kashipur area. Investigators said Mustafa had also completed the formalities for obtaining police permission to organise the meeting where the alleged inflammatory remarks were made.

Police said the investigation is continuing and further legal action will be taken based on the FIRs registered in the case.
