Thiruvananthapuram, 30 June (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread heavy rainfall across Kerala over the next four days, with isolated extremely heavy showers expected in parts of the state.

An Orange Alert has been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Tuesday, indicating the likelihood of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. According to the IMD, these areas could receive between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm of rain within 24 hours.

A Yellow Alert, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours, has also been issued for several districts. On Tuesday, the alert is in force for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

On Wednesday, the Yellow Alert will cover Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. On Thursday, alerts remain in effect for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, while on Friday, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod are expected to receive heavy rainfall.

The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph at isolated places during the period.

The prevailing weather conditions are being influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the central-east Arabian Sea off the Maharashtra coast, while another cyclonic circulation persists over north Telangana and adjoining regions. These systems are expected to enhance moisture inflow and trigger widespread rainfall across Kerala.

The weather agency has forecast widespread rain over Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep until July 3, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall expected on Tuesday and heavy rainfall likely to continue at isolated locations over the following three days.

The IMD has advised residents, particularly those living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant, monitor official weather updates and take necessary precautions as the state braces for another spell of intense monsoon activity.
