Mumbai, 27 June (HS): The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)

distanced itself on Saturday from party MLA Sana Malik's statements on talaq

and polygamy in the Maharashtra legislature, noting that they reflected her

personal opinions rather than the party's official position.

Sunil Tatkare, president of the Maharashtra NCP, explained that his party

disagrees with Malik's views, stating that the NCP has continuously stood up

for women's rights regardless of caste, religion, or creed.

Malik came under fire earlier this week for claiming in the state legislature

that the issue of polygamy is not exclusive to Muslim males. During a

discussion in the legislature on the atrocities committed against Muslim women

as a result of triple talaq, BJP MLA Devayani Farande stated that polygamy is

practiced by just 1% of males in Pakistan, and men must get permission from

authorities before marrying again.

To which the NCP MLA said, If anything mentioned in

the Quran is implemented in Pakistan, we demand that it be brought here as

well. She defended her comments, claiming that she did not endorse

polygamy but was only informing House about its various forms.

Her comments sparked heated reactions, with many authorities rejecting her

views on Muslim Personal Law and women's rights.

Tatkare stated that MLA Sana Malik's remark on the topic of talaq was her own

perspective. The NCP does not support those viewpoints. He stated that the

party has continuously advocated for the protection of women's rights,

regardless of caste, religion, or creed. The party's view is that no woman

should be constantly threatened with one-sided and unfair divorce of marriage,

he stated in the post on X.
