Sivasagar (Assam), 27 June (HS): Sivasagar Police arrested four alleged cattle smugglers and rescued 44 cattle during a targeted operation based on specific intelligence inputs in the district.

Police said a truck travelling from Tinsukia to Nagaon was intercepted and searched. During the inspection, officers found 44 cattle being transported illegally. Preliminary investigation revealed that the animals were being moved from Tinsukia through Nagaon to a cattle market in Meghalaya.

The arrested accused include the truck driver, the handyman, and two alleged smugglers identified as Amar Deka and Vijay Daloi. A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the animal protection laws and all four accused are being interrogated for further investigation.

Despite the enforcement of stringent cattle protection laws in Assam, incidents of illegal cattle transportation and smuggling continue to be reported from different parts of the state.----------
