Recovered youths honoured with Soorma rings and T-shirts
Punjab to make 3,100 sports grounds and 3,000 gyms operational by July 15
Ludhiana , 27 June (H.S.): Taking the state government’s ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign to the next level, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday launched the ‘Soorma’ Campaign in Ludhiana and honoured youths who have successfully overcome drug addiction.
The Chief Minister felicitated recovered youths with specially crafted ‘Soorma’ rings and T-shirts, describing them as warriors who had shown courage, resilience and determination in defeating addiction. He said the initiative marks the next phase of Punjab’s anti-drug movement, under which recovered drug victims will be transformed into “Ambassadors of Hope” to motivate others at the grassroots level.
CM Mann said that those who have remained drug-free for more than two years would not only inspire others to come out of addiction but would also be provided employment opportunities by the state government. He said these youths have overcome a painful past and are now ready to serve society by sharing their personal experiences.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said drug addiction carries a deep social stigma and often isolates victims from society. He said the youths honoured at the event had not only battled addiction but had also regained their confidence and dignity.
Reiterating that sports are the strongest weapon against drugs, CM Mann announced that around 3,100 village sports grounds and 3,000 gyms will become operational across Punjab by July 15. He said these facilities will help channelise the energy of youth in a positive direction.
The Chief Minister said the Punjab Government is strengthening de-addiction and rehabilitation services across the state. He added that modern rehabilitation centres with treatment, counselling and aftercare facilities are being established in all districts.
CM Mann said the ‘Soorma’ initiative reflects the government’s commitment to building a drug-free and Rangla Punjab. He said recovered youths are living examples that timely intervention, family support and quality healthcare can rebuild lives.
He also launched an anthem dedicated to individuals fighting addiction and announced that the Soorma Programme will now be taken to every district and village of Punjab. Eligible individuals who have completed de-addiction treatment and remained drug-free for at least two years can register by sending “Soorma” on WhatsApp to 9779142200.
The Chief Minister said strict action will continue against drug traffickers, while full support will be extended to every person seeking recovery. Cabinet Minister Dr Balbir Singh and several dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
