Mumbai, 24 June (HS): Maharashtra has formed a special
committee of women MLAs to study and suggest modifications to current
legislative frameworks governing religious conversion and sexual harassment in
private firms. This comes after recent complaints of illicit conversions and office
abuse at corporate and manufacturing enterprises in Solapur and Talegaon. Chief
Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the decision during the legislative session at
Mumbai's Vidhan Bhavan, emphasizing the government's zero-tolerance approach
towards workplace exploitation and harassment of women. The council will
develop legislation to safeguard women against religious conversions that are
forced, fraudulent, or misrepresented.
“Will take strict steps to prevent atrocities against women
in the corporate sector and incidents of religious conversion! Based on the
SIT's investigation regarding religious conversion, FIRs have been registered
against nine individuals. The final findings will become clear once the
chargesheet is filed. Action will be taken post inquiry against those
responsible in the Solapur ITI conversion case and the sexual harassment case
involving a Spanish company in Talegaon Dabhade. A special committee of women
MLAs will be constituted to undertake a comprehensive review of the existing
legal framework and recommend necessary reforms in light of cases involving
religious conversion and sexual harassment in private companies,” said Chief
Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
