Bhubaneswar, 02 June (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Ganjam District Collector and Superintendent of Police regarding the alleged custodial death of a youth at Kabisuryanagar Police Station in Odisha's Ganjam district.
The Commission took cognizance of complaints submitted on May 31 and June 1, 2026, alleging that the youth, identified as Sahu, died as a result of police torture while in custody. Acting on the complaint, the NHRC registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the matter.
In its communication to the district administration and police authorities, the Commission has directed officials to furnish comprehensive details related to the incident. The report is expected to include the post-mortem examination report, a copy of the FIR, the site inspection report, details regarding the cause of death, and any available CCTV footage from the police lock-up.
The NHRC has also sought information on whether a magisterial inquiry was conducted following the death. The Commission stated that its investigation would examine all relevant facts and circumstances to ascertain whether any police excesses or violations of human rights contributed to the death.
The incident has sparked widespread public concern, with family members of the deceased and local residents alleging custodial torture. Following the incident, social activists filed a formal complaint before the NHRC, seeking an independent investigation and accountability.
