Thiruvananthapuram, 16 June (H.S.) :The Census exercise in Kerala will commence today with the launch of a self-enumeration facility that allows residents to submit their household details online as part of the Centre’s Digital India initiative.
The self-enumeration portal will remain open until June 30, giving citizens an opportunity to provide Census-related information digitally before field officials begin house visits. The Census will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase focusing on house listing and housing-related data collection.
Residents can complete the process using their mobile phones by accessing the official self-enumeration portal. After entering their mobile number, they can log in using a one-time password (OTP). Users will then be required to mark the location of their residence and fill in details about family members and household facilities.
The first phase includes 34 questions covering housing conditions, household amenities and demographic information. Once the form is completed and submitted, a reference number will be sent to the registered mobile number through SMS. Authorities have advised residents to keep this number safely as it will be required during the verification process.
Officials said people living in rented accommodation should provide details of the place where they are currently residing. The online system is expected to make the Census process more convenient and reduce the workload during physical verification.
Any corrections required after submission can be communicated to Census enumerators during their field visits.
Following the online data collection, Census officials will undertake door-to-door visits across the State from July 1 to July 30. Households that have already completed self-enumeration will only need to provide their reference number to the visiting officials.
The second phase of the Census, which will focus on population enumeration, is scheduled to be conducted in Kerala during February and March 2027.
The Census is expected to provide updated demographic and housing data that will help governments formulate welfare programmes, infrastructure projects and development policies.
