Dibrugarh (Assam), 15 June (HS): A coordinated anti-drug operation conducted by Dibrugarh Police near the Town Railway Station's Harijan Colony resulted in the arrest of nine suspected drug peddlers and the seizure of suspected heroin, cash and gold ornaments.

Addressing reporters on Monday, senior police official Nayan Moni Baruah said the raid was carried out as part of an intensified campaign against narcotics trafficking being undertaken across the district under the direction of the district police administration.

Police investigations over the past week reportedly pointed to the Railway Colony area, popularly known as “Koyla Patti,” as a key source of drug distribution. Based on the intelligence gathered, law enforcement teams launched a surprise operation in the locality and searched multiple premises.

During the raid, officers recovered around 79 grams of suspected heroin, cash amounting to ₹4.92 lakh and gold ornaments from the residence of Sujata Biswas. All seized items have been taken into custody for further investigation.

Officials said efforts are underway to trace the origin of the contraband and identify the wider network involved. Police are also examining whether any of the arrested individuals have links with the Indian Railways.

Baruah stated that if any accused is found to be a railway employee, the matter will be referred to railway authorities for appropriate departmental action. The operation is part of Assam Police’s continuing drive to dismantle drug trafficking networks across Upper Assam.-----------
