Thiruvananthapuram, 15 June (H.S.):
V.P. Sheela, the first woman driver recruited to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) through the Public Service Commission (PSC), will drive the bus carrying Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan during the state-level launch of the Priyadarshini scheme, which offers free travel for women on KSRTC ordinary services.
A native of Vettikkamattom in Kothappady and currently attached to the Perumbavoor depot, Sheela said she was thrilled to be chosen for the historic occasion.
“I am extremely happy to be part of such an important moment. It is a matter of great pride that the government entrusted me with this responsibility and remembered me for this significant event,” she said.
The Priyadarshini scheme is aimed at enhancing women’s mobility, safety and accessibility in public transport. The state government has projected the initiative as a major step towards creating a more inclusive and women-friendly public transportation system.
For Sheela, the assignment is also recognition of a career spent breaking barriers in a field traditionally dominated by men. She entered the profession 13 years ago and went on to create history by becoming KSRTC’s first woman driver recruited through the PSC.
Over the years, she has served in several depots and handled a variety of services, including ordinary, fast passenger and super-fast buses. Driving large passenger vehicles has long been part of her daily routine, and she has earned a reputation for her professionalism and commitment.
Her selection to drive the Chief Minister’s bus at the launch event is being seen as a symbolic gesture highlighting the increasing participation of women in public service and the transport sector.
As Kerala rolls out the Priyadarshini scheme, Sheela’s presence behind the wheel is expected to add a special significance to the occasion, reflecting both the government’s focus on women’s empowerment and the changing face of public transport in the state.
