Veteran Tamil filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja passed away in Chennai on Wednesday at the age of 84. He had been battling health-related issues for some time. His demise has triggered an outpouring of grief across the Indian film industry, with several political and cultural leaders paying tribute to his remarkable legacy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over Bharathiraja’s passing in a message posted on the social media platform X on Thursday. He described the filmmaker’s death as a profound loss and said Bharathiraja was a towering figure in Indian cinema whose work gave a new direction to Tamil filmmaking. The Prime Minister noted that his vivid and realistic portrayal of rural life would be remembered for generations and extended his condolences to the bereaved family and countless admirers.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said Bharathiraja was renowned for his visionary storytelling and authentic depiction of rural life. He remarked that the filmmaker helped shape a distinct identity for Tamil cinema and enriched Indian cinema through numerous memorable films. Birla added that his contributions would continue to inspire future generations of filmmakers and artists.

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said Bharathiraja’s passing marked the end of an extraordinary chapter in Indian cinema. He observed that the filmmaker redefined storytelling by powerfully bringing the lives, aspirations, and emotions of ordinary people to the big screen. The minister also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the director’s family, colleagues, and admirers.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nitin Nabin also expressed grief over Bharathiraja’s demise, stating that he portrayed rural life and human emotions with exceptional depth and sensitivity through his films. He further noted that Bharathiraja played a significant role in introducing and nurturing new talent in the film industry.

Born on July 17, 1941, in Allinagaram village of Theni district in Tamil Nadu, Bharathiraja was the son of Periya Mayathevar and Meenakshi Ammal. His birth name was Chinnasamy, though he later became widely known by his screen name, Bharathiraja.

His directorial debut came with the landmark Tamil film 16 Vayathinile, which is regarded as a milestone in Tamil cinema. Over the course of his illustrious career, he directed approximately 44 films, leaving an enduring imprint on Indian cinema through his distinctive storytelling style and pioneering portrayal of rural narratives.
