New Delhi, 11 June (H.S.): The Central Government has decided to implement the Network Survey Vehicle (NSV) system to make the monitoring and maintenance of national highways more digital, technology-driven, and efficient, with the objective of enhancing road safety, transparency, and accountability.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, these state-of-the-art Network Survey Vehicles are equipped with advanced 3D laser technology, GPS systems, and high-resolution cameras. The vehicles will identify potholes, cracks, and other surface defects on highways and generate detailed digital data for assessment and maintenance planning.

The ministry stated that while conventional methods enabled the survey of only 20 to 80 kilometres of road per day, the new NSV system has increased the survey capacity to nearly 300 kilometres per day.

Data collected by the NSVs will be transmitted to the central monitoring system within 48 hours, and a detailed, actionable analysis report will be generated within 10 days. Previously, the entire process typically took between four and six months to complete.

The ministry said that all reports will be shared digitally with the concerned agencies, and repair and maintenance activities will also be monitored through a system-based mechanism. Under the new framework, inspection officers will be able to access NSV reports on-site through a mobile application, upload geo-tagged photographs, and record observations and comments in real time.

According to the ministry, the initiative aims to improve the overall quality of national highways, reduce road accidents, and ensure greater transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the highway maintenance system.

The government believes that the adoption of advanced digital monitoring technologies will significantly strengthen infrastructure management and contribute to safer and more reliable road networks across the country.
