Guwahati, 11 June (HS): A 28-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her rented residence in the Hatigaon area of Guwahati, prompting police to launch an investigation and arrest her boyfriend, officials informed on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Sushmita Basumatary. According to police sources, she was reportedly with her boyfriend, Akash Prasad, in the rented accommodation until late Tuesday night.

The woman's body was discovered on Wednesday. The incident raised concerns among her family members, who suspect foul play and have alleged that she may have been murdered.

Acting on the complaint and preliminary findings, Hatigaon Police registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the matter. During the course of the investigation, Akash Prasad was taken into custody in connection with the case.

Police officials stated that the exact cause of death remains unknown at this stage. The findings of the post-mortem examination and forensic investigation are expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the death.
