Kolkata, 11 June (H.S.): Former Rajya Sabha member and senior politician Sukhenendu Sekhar Roy, who recently resigned from both the Rajya Sabha and the Trinamool Congress, has launched a sharp attack on West Bengal's ruling establishment through a lengthy social media post. Blending literary references with political commentary, Roy accused the state's former party leadership of fostering corruption, arrogance, administrative failures, and neglect of public sentiment.
Opening his post with lines from Michael Madhusudan Dutt's epic Meghnad Badh Kavya, Roy suggested that a once-powerful political dispensation was now facing the consequences of growing public anger. He argued that rulers often forget that their authority is derived from the people and that sustained disregard for public concerns eventually triggers a backlash.
Invoking the Latin phrase Vox Populi, Vox Dei meaning the voice of the people is the voice of God Roy said that governments frequently lose sight of the electorate that brought them to power. According to him, public resentment accumulates when promises remain unfulfilled and governance becomes detached from the concerns of ordinary citizens.
Referring to the widely discussed incident at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, Roy claimed that the episode sparked an unprecedented mass movement across West Bengal and beyond. He said people from all walks of life including doctors, lawyers, teachers, artists, athletes, workers and ordinary citizens , joined protests demanding justice, but alleged that the ruling establishment failed to adequately respond to public sentiment.
Roy further alleged that corruption, extortion, crimes against women, and failures in sectors such as industry, healthcare, education and employment had eroded public confidence. He maintained that the electorate was no longer willing to tolerate what he described as political arrogance and misgovernance.
In one of the most controversial sections of the post, Roy made several indirect references to senior leaders of the Trinamool Congress. Without naming individuals, he used highly critical language against certain prominent figures within the party. Political observers noted that some of these remarks appeared to be aimed at senior Dum Dum MP Sougata Roy, with Sukhenendu Sekhar Roy making insinuations about the veteran parliamentarian's conduct.
Roy also suggested that recent political developments had pushed the ruling camp into a position of uncertainty and that its future prospects were under increasing scrutiny.
Concluding his post, he quoted medieval Bengali poet Chandidas: Above all is humanity; there is nothing greater than that. Roy said the principle should serve as a reminder that people and human values must remain at the centre of public life and governance.
