Guwahati, 25 May (HS): Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora on Monday said the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill would help curb practices such as polygamy and child marriage while ensuring equal property rights for daughters in the state.
Introducing the Bill in the Assembly, the minister stated that women in Assam would receive justice immediately after the legislation came into effect. He asserted that the proposed law seeks to establish equality and legal protection for women across communities.
The minister further highlighted several provisions related to live-in relationships under the proposed legislation. According to the Bill, a woman abandoned by her partner in a live-in relationship without consent would be entitled to maintenance and financial support.
He also said that children born out of live-in relationships would be recognised as legitimate under the law. The proposed legislation additionally lays down new regulations and legal obligations for couples choosing to live together outside marriage.
The introduction of the UCC Bill has sparked fresh political and social debate in the state, with discussions intensifying over its impact on personal laws and social practices.------------
