Hooghly, 25 May (H.S.): A pall of gloom descended over Saptagram area in Hooghly district after local panchayat member Amal Debnath was found dead by hanging at his residence on Monday morning.

According to family members, Amal Debnath had returned home as usual on Sunday night and had dinner with his family. However, instead of sleeping with the family, he reportedly went downstairs to sleep alone. On Monday morning, family members found him hanging inside the room and immediately informed the police.

Residents described Amal Debnath as a well-behaved and popular person in the locality. His sudden death has left locals shocked, with many unable to understand what could have driven him to take such an extreme step.

The police from Magra police station reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. An investigation has been initiated to determine whether there was any other reason behind the death.

The incident has triggered mourning across the area, with local residents and acquaintances expressing grief over the tragic demise of the panchayat member.
