Kolkata, 20 May (H.S.) : Two leaders of the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday moved the Calcutta High Court seeking protection from alleged coercive police action in cases registered against them following the declaration of the West Bengal Assembly election results.

The petitioners include TMC MLA Paresh Ram Das and party leader Kailash Kumar Mishra.

Senior advocate Kishore Dutta, appearing for Paresh Ram Das, who has been elected for a second consecutive term from the Canning Paschim Assembly constituency, sought an urgent hearing in the matter. He informed the court that six FIRs had been lodged against his client on May 16 and apprehended that several more cases could be registered against him.

Kishore Dutta, who had served as the Advocate General of West Bengal during the TMC regime, submitted before the bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya that his client should be granted protection from any coercive police action in connection with the criminal cases filed against him.

Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya observed that the matter would be heard on Thursday.

Notably, Paresh Ram Das retained the Canning Paschim Assembly seat for a second straight term by a margin of more than 40,000 votes.

Similarly, Kailash Kumar Mishra, the defeated TMC candidate from the Bally Assembly constituency in Howrah district, also filed a petition before the High Court seeking protection from stringent police action in criminal cases registered against him after the election results were declared.

The court said that the matter would also be included in Thursday’s hearing list.
