Kolkata, 20 May (H.S.) : Debraj Chakraborty was detained by police late Tuesday night in connection with a post-poll violence case linked to the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Police officials confirmed the development on Wednesday.
Debraj Chakraborty is the husband of Aditi Munshi, the singer-turned-politician and former MLA from the Rajarhat-Gopalpur Assembly constituency.
However, police have not yet clarified whether Chakraborty has been formally arrested or detained only for questioning. Sources said he is being interrogated in connection with an old case related to violence that erupted after the 2021 Assembly election results.
According to reports, BJP worker Prosenjit Biswas died under mysterious circumstances following the declaration of the election results in 2021. Allegations had surfaced at the time that he had been forced to commit suicide. The incident had triggered widespread political tension across the state, and a complaint was filed describing it as a case of post-poll violence.
Sources said Debraj Chakraborty has now been detained for questioning in connection with that same case. He currently serves as a Trinamool councillor in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. Police have not issued any official statement on the matter so far.
Chakraborty is considered close to Abhishek Banerjee, a senior Trinamool Congress leader and Member of Parliament. After the BJP formed the government in West Bengal, several BJP leaders had demanded action against him on social media platform X, alleging his involvement in criminal activities.
In the recently concluded Assembly elections, Aditi Munshi lost the Rajarhat-Gopalpur seat. She was seen breaking down emotionally outside the counting centre after the results were announced. At that time, both she and her husband had refused to speak to the media.
Since the BJP government assumed office in the state, police action against alleged illegal and criminal activities involving Trinamool Congress leaders has intensified. Raids and legal action are being carried out in multiple cases related to alleged law-and-order violations and anti-social activities.
