Kolkata, 20 May (H.S.) : The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party and a section of the media over the controversy surrounding the alleged vast properties linked to party MP Abhishek Banerjee.
In a statement issued by the party, the TMC claimed that the list of properties being attributed to Abhishek Banerjee was “false and fabricated.” The party also alleged that a notice issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation had been unethically leaked to sections of the media by the BJP.
The statement said journalists were free to personally visit the addresses mentioned in the reports to verify whether the properties actually belonged to Abhishek Banerjee.
The party further urged the media not to circulate “false and misleading” reports on the matter.
According to the TMC, the controversy over Abhishek Banerjee’s alleged properties was “manufactured” and lacked any legal or administrative credibility. The party alleged that a section of the media had been reporting the matter in a one-sided manner without independently verifying the facts, which it described as “extremely unfortunate.”
The Trinamool Congress maintained that even a journalist with basic professional ethics and moral responsibility would be able to ascertain the truth by visiting the addresses mentioned in the notice.
Instead, the party alleged, reports were being published solely on the basis of information supplied by the BJP.
The TMC appealed to media organisations to refrain from spreading “fabricated posts and fake news” and urged them to act with greater sensitivity and responsibility while reporting on the issue.
