Kolkata, 20 May (H.S.) : Panic gripped Kulti Railway Station under the Asansol Division of Eastern Railway late Tuesday night after a fire broke out in four wagons of a coal-laden freight train stationed at Platform No. 3.

According to eyewitnesses, smoke was first seen emerging from one of the wagons, following which the flames rapidly spread to four adjacent wagons. Thick smoke and rising flames created panic among passengers and local residents present at the station premises.

Railway authorities and the fire department were immediately informed after the incident. A fire engine from Asansol rushed to the spot and launched firefighting operations. After prolonged efforts, the fire was brought under control.

During the operation, extensive security arrangements were made in and around the station area to prevent any untoward incident. Railway movement was temporarily affected due to the fire, and several trains were halted as a precautionary measure.

No casualties or injuries have been reported in the incident so far.

Officials fear substantial damage to railway property due to the blaze. However, the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. A detailed investigation has been initiated jointly by the railway administration, the Railway Protection Force, and the fire department.

Local residents said the incident could have turned more serious had the fire brigade not reached the spot on time. Authorities confirmed that the situation is now completely under control.
