Noida,
20 May (HS): Gautam Buddha Nagar police detained two additional people on
Wednesday in connection with the suspected dowry death of a 24-year-old woman
in Greater Noida, according to authorities. According to an official statement,
Poonam (the victim's husband's mother) and Vinod (the husband's uncle) were
detained, while the husband, Hritik, and his father, Manoj, had previously been
arrested in the case. According to
police, a FIR was filed at Ecotech-3 police station on May 17 under Sections 85
and 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry
Prohibition Act of 1961. Section 85 of the BNS deals with subjecting a woman to
physical, mental, or dowry-related abuse, whereas Section 80(2) deals with
dowry death and imposes penalties ranging from seven years' imprisonment to
life imprisonment.
Police
said a total of seven people were listed in the FIR, four of whom have been
detained, and that additional investigation is underway. The case involves
Deepika Nagar, who died on Sunday night after reportedly falling from the
terrace of her three-story matrimonial house in Jalpura village, Gautam Buddh
Nagar district. Her in-laws said she died after falling from the building, but
her family claims she was murdered for dowry and that the incident was neither
accidental or suicide. The postmortem report of a lady revealed a brain bleed,
internal organ rupture, and many contusions on the deceased's body, despite the
fact that police stated that viscera samples had been saved for forensic
investigation after the autopsy.
Deepika's
father, Sanjay Nagar, filed a complaint saying she contacted him immediately
before the event and informed him she was being harassed by her in-laws over
dowry demands. According to the family,
the accused demanded a Toyota Fortuner SUV and an extra Rs 45-50 lakh in cash. Deepika's
father further said that her body had several damage marks, including wounds
matching those inflicted by a screwdriver, and that there were variations in
accounts supplied by in-laws about how she was injured. Her relatives also
claimed that she was exposed to mental and physical assault within months after
her marriage in December 2024. Police previously stated that filming of the
postmortem examination had been undertaken, and that further parts might be
added based on forensic results and the continuation of the inquiry.
