Chandigarh, 20 May (H.S.): Keeping in view the intense summer heat and rising temperatures, the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, Chhatbir Zoo, has made elaborate arrangements to ensure the safety and comfort of animals. The initiative has been undertaken under the guidance of Punjab Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak.

Zoo authorities said special measures have been implemented for different categories of animals to protect them from heat stroke and harsh sunlight.

For carnivorous animals such as tigers, lions, leopards and bears, desert coolers and air circulator fans have been installed inside their night shelters. The animal management cell is continuously monitoring the enclosures to ensure they remain cool and dry. Mesh screens have also been fitted on windows to maintain a mosquito-free environment.

Several enclosures have been covered with 75 percent density agro nets to reduce surrounding temperatures and provide shade. Water tankers and tractors have also been kept on standby to ensure uninterrupted water supply throughout the zoo during emergencies.

For herbivorous animals, temporary shelters made from bamboo, wooden logs and grass material have been prepared to shield them from direct sunlight and heat waves. Muddy water pools and mud bath areas have been created in elephant, Manipur deer, swamp deer and deer safari enclosures. Concrete pools are also being kept filled with water round the clock.

To protect birds from hot winds and extreme sunlight, cages have been covered with agro nets and jute mats. Sprinkler showers have also been installed in bird enclosures and aviaries to keep the birds cool and comfortable during the summer season.
