
Guwahati, 20 May (HS): The sixteenth session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will commence from Thursday, with the election of the new Speaker set to take place on the very first day of the session. The political atmosphere in the state has already intensified ahead of the proceedings, particularly over the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition.
NDA nominee and MLA Ranjit Das has filed his nomination for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The nomination papers were submitted by a delegation of NDA leaders, including ministers Atul Bora and Chandan Brahma, along with MLAs Pijush Hazarika, Keshab Mahanta and Manab Deka.
Earlier, senior BJP leader Chandramohan Patowary took oath as the Protem Speaker before the Governor, paving the way for the smooth conduct of the Assembly session and the Speaker’s election process.
Meanwhile, political discussions have intensified over the selection of the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly. For the first time since Independence, a “Miya” leader is set to become the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly. Wajed Ali Choudhury is likely to assume the role, triggering sharp reactions and political exchanges between the ruling alliance and opposition parties.
The issue has already become a major talking point in Assam politics, with both sides engaging in strong statements ahead of the Assembly session.-----------
