Rain in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 02 May (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across Kerala over the next three days, prompting the issuance of yellow alerts in several districts. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely to accompany the rains.

According to the IMD, yellow alerts have been issued on Saturday for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts. On Sunday, alerts will be in place for Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, while Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram districts are under alert on Monday. The warning indicates the likelihood of isolated heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

The weather department further said that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected to continue at isolated places across the state till Tuesday. The sudden shift in weather conditions has raised concerns over potential damage to infrastructure and risks to public safety.

Issuing a detailed advisory, the IMD warned that lightning poses serious threats to human and animal life, as well as to electrical and communication systems. People have been advised to move indoors at the first sign of lightning and avoid open areas, terraces and water bodies.

Residents are also advised to unplug electrical appliances, avoid using wired telephones, and refrain from outdoor activities including fishing, boating and cycling during thunderstorms. In case of lightning strikes, immediate medical assistance is crucial, as the first few moments are critical for saving lives.
