Kochi, 02 May (H.S.): Amid intensifying discussions within the Congress over the chief ministerial face in Kerala, the reappointment of K.C. Venugopal as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has sparked fresh political curiosity. The move by the party leadership comes at a time when internal lobbying between supporters of V.D. Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala is gaining momentum, with indications that Venugopal could emerge as a consensus candidate.
However, sections within the party believe that his continuation as PAC chairman may effectively sideline him from the chief ministerial race. Sources close to Venugopal, though, maintain that he can relinquish the PAC post and return to Kerala if he is chosen for the top job.
The appointment for the 2026–27 term was announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The PAC comprises 22 members, including 15 from the Lok Sabha and seven from the Rajya Sabha. By convention, the chairperson’s post is held by a member from the principal Opposition party in the Lok Sabha, paving the way for Venugopal’s reappointment.
Political observers note that Venugopal’s decision to remain in Delhi may also be influenced by signals from the Indian Union Muslim League, which has openly backed Satheesan for the chief minister’s post. The League’s stance is expected to carry weight in the event of a United Democratic Front (UDF) victory.
Reports suggest that if Venugopal steps aside, his supporters may shift allegiance to Chennithala. However, his camp has dismissed any such decision so far. While Venugopal is believed to enjoy significant backing among MLAs, Satheesan is seen to have stronger support from alliance partners.
With counting scheduled soon, a favourable verdict for the UDF could leave the Congress high command grappling with a delicate leadership decision.
