Kolkata, 19 May (H.S.) : A young woman died under mysterious circumstances at a guest house in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata, prompting a police investigation and the arrest of two persons, officials said on Tuesday.

According to preliminary information, the woman was initially believed to have died after falling from a mango tree inside the guest house premises. However, the deceased woman’s family has alleged that she was raped and murdered.

Police said the woman had arrived at the guest house on Monday night in an app-based cab along with a female friend and two young men. The incident reportedly took place later that night.

Her companions claimed that the woman climbed a mango tree within the guest house premises to pluck mangoes, but accidentally fell and suffered serious injuries. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Following the incident, tension spread in the area. Bidhannagar North Police Station recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Police have already arrested two persons, including a woman, in connection with the case. Investigators are questioning those present at the guest house and examining all possible angles surrounding the incident.

The family members of the deceased, however, have rejected the claim that the woman died after falling from a tree and have demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged rape and murder.

Bidhannagar North Police Station is continuing the investigation.
