Kolkata, 19 May (H.S.) : A Trinamool Congress councillor from North 24 Parganas was detained along with two women and another man on Monday night after local residents alleged that objectionable activities were being carried out at his residence in Bongaon’s Kalupur Panchpota area.

According to local sources, residents of the area caught the individuals at the house and later handed them over to police from Bongaon police station. However, sources said all four were subsequently released after preliminary questioning.

The accused councillor, Sukumar Roy, represents Ward No. 22 of the Bongaon municipality. Denying the allegations, Roy claimed that no illegal or immoral activity had taken place at his residence. He stated that the two women had visited the house to inspect it for a possible rental arrangement.

Police said they are verifying the allegations and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Residents of the locality alleged that disturbances had been continuing in the area for a long time. Raja Halder, a local resident, claimed that outsiders were frequently brought to the councillor’s house and parties continued late into the night.

“We had protested several times earlier, but since he is a councillor, no action was taken,” Halder alleged.

Locals further claimed that the councillor was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when police arrived at the spot on Monday afternoon. Eyewitnesses alleged that two women from Shantipur and another man were present inside the house at the time.

Another resident, Susmita Biswas, alleged that women were often brought to the house and drinking sessions took place there regularly, despite repeated objections from neighbours.

Reacting to the incident, BJP’s Bongaon organisational district president Bikash Ghosh said that if anyone is involved in wrongdoing, the police are bound to take action.

Police have not yet confirmed any criminal charges in connection with the incident.
