Kolkata, 19 May (H.S.) : In a dramatic political development ahead of the Falta Assembly by-election, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan on Tuesday announced that he was withdrawing from the contest, just 48 hours before polling.
Addressing a press conference on the final day of campaigning, Jahangir said he would no longer contest the re-election and also welcomed the “special package” announced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for the development of Falta.
He said his decision was taken in the interest of peace and development in the constituency. According to Jahangir, the Chief Minister’s development package for Falta could bring greater progress to the region. However, he did not clarify whether the decision to step aside was taken under instructions from the Trinamool leadership or party leader Abhishek Banerjee.
As the deadline for withdrawal of nominations has already passed, Jahangir Khan’s name will continue to remain on the electronic voting machines despite his decision not to contest actively. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari held a roadshow in Falta on Tuesday in support of BJP candidate Debangshu Panda. Jahangir’s announcement triggered celebrations among BJP supporters in the area.
Appearing emotional during the press conference, Jahangir said his dream had always been to build a “Golden Falta” and that he was stepping aside keeping the interests of local residents in mind. Avoiding questions regarding any political pressure or internal party directive, he said he did not wish to comment further on the matter.
The Falta constituency had witnessed controversy during the April 29 Assembly election after allegations of irregularities and tampering with electronic voting machines surfaced from several booths. Following the allegations, Suvendu Adhikari demanded a re-election, after which the Election Commission ordered fresh polling in the constituency. The developments came shortly after the BJP formed the government in West Bengal for the first time with a decisive majority.
Political observers noted that Jahangir Khan appeared isolated during the campaign period, with limited support from the Trinamool leadership. Although Abhishek Banerjee had campaigned for him before the final phase of polling, no senior Trinamool leader was later seen campaigning in his favour.
On Monday, Jahangir had also approached the Calcutta High Court seeking protection from arrest. Responding to allegations of electoral malpractice, he maintained that he had contested the election in accordance with Election Commission guidelines and denied involvement in any irregularities.
