Kolkata, 19 May (H.S.) : Ahead of the re-poll scheduled in the Falta Assembly constituency on May 21, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday conducted a massive roadshow in support of BJP candidate Debanshu Panda. On the final day of campaigning, Adhikari once again visited Falta and sought to energise party workers and supporters through a show of strength.

Before the roadshow, the Chief Minister offered prayers at a Shiva temple in Falta and sought blessings. The campaign procession began from Kalitala Ground at Hasimnagar in the Bangnagar-II Panchayat area.

Large crowds gathered along both sides of the road to catch a glimpse of the BJP leader. Supporters welcomed him with flower showers at several locations, while Adhikari continuously waved at the crowd in acknowledgement. Due to the heavy turnout, the roadshow slowed down at multiple points.

Following the campaign event, the Chief Minister was scheduled to have lunch at the residence of BJP worker Swapan Mondal. The BJP has alleged that Mondal was killed during the post-poll violence that followed the 2021 Assembly elections.

Political observers believe that although the Falta by-election may not significantly alter the broader political landscape of the state, the BJP is determined to increase its tally and is leaving no stone unturned in the campaign. Adhikari has been actively canvassing in the constituency and had earlier addressed a public meeting there on Saturday.

The by-election has also attracted political attention over an alleged confrontation between Diamond Harbour Police district observer Ajaypal Sharma and Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan during the election process. Several political analysts believe the controversy has further heightened the significance of the contest.

At Saturday’s rally, Adhikari had issued a warning to TMC candidate Jahangir Khan, saying, “Let the polling end first, after that I will deal with him.”

Opposition parties had earlier alleged irregularities and unfair polling at several booths in the Falta Assembly constituency during the previous round of voting. After reviewing the complaints, the Election Commission decided to order a re-poll. Voting in Falta will now take place on May 21, while counting of votes is scheduled for May 24.
