Kolkata, 19 May (H.S.) : A fresh twist has emerged in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, as Sanjib Mukhopadhyay, popularly known as ‘Kaku’, has approached the Calcutta High Court claiming that he is being falsely implicated in the matter. The move comes after the victim’s mother sought the arrest of former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh and two others in connection with the case.

Sanjib Mukhopadhyay filed a petition before the High Court on Tuesday, alleging that baseless accusations were being levelled against him. Appearing before the bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, his counsel argued that the allegations against his client were fabricated and sought judicial intervention in the matter.

The petition also claimed that Mukhopadhyay’s residence was vandalised after the Trinamool Congress lost power in the state. The court has permitted him to file the case.

Earlier, the victim’s mother had moved the High Court seeking a fresh probe into the rape and murder of the young doctor at RG Kar Medical College. She had also approached the Sealdah court demanding the arrest of former MLA Nirmal Ghosh, Sanjib Mukhopadhyay, and Panihati Municipality chairman Somnath Dey.

According to the victim’s family, the body of the deceased doctor was allegedly taken out of RG Kar Hospital and cremated hurriedly at the Panihati crematorium without properly informing the family, allegedly in an attempt to destroy evidence.

The family further alleged that Sanjib Mukhopadhyay, who lives near their residence, repeatedly pushed for the immediate transportation and cremation of the body. They accused him of working in coordination with Trinamool leaders and pressuring the family under the guise of offering support, so that the cremation could be completed quickly before any evidence remained.

Local sources said Mukhopadhyay is well known in the area by the nickname ‘Kaku’. It has also been claimed that his signature appeared on documents related to the cremation of the victim’s body.

Sources further stated that Mukhopadhyay was once a CPI(M) councillor. After losing elections, he reportedly remained politically unaffiliated for several years before joining the Trinamool Congress in 2019.
