Kolkata, 19 May (H.S.) : As many as 17 properties linked to Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee have come under the scanner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation over allegations of illegal construction and deviations from sanctioned building plans.
According to sources, the civic body has initiated proceedings under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, against the owners and co-owners of the properties. The provision allows authorities to seek explanations from property owners accused of unauthorised construction before further action is taken. Notices are also expected to be pasted on the walls of the concerned properties.
Among the key properties under scrutiny are residences located at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road and 121 Kalighat Road in Kolkata. In the case of the Harish Mukherjee Road property, a notice has reportedly been issued to “Leaps and Bounds Private Limited”, a company believed to be associated with the Banerjee family. For the Kalighat Road property, the notice has been issued in the name of Lata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee’s mother.
Both properties are located close to the Kalighat residence of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, no official reaction from the Trinamool Congress had been issued at the time of filing this report.
Opposition parties in West Bengal have repeatedly raised allegations over the years regarding the number of properties allegedly owned by members of the Banerjee family. The CPI(M), Congress and later the BJP have all targeted the Trinamool leadership on this issue. Mamata Banerjee had earlier dismissed such allegations as politically motivated attempts to malign her family.
The latest development comes shortly after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while addressing an election rally in Falta, indirectly targeted Abhishek Banerjee by referring to him as “Mr Nephew”. Suvendu claimed that he had obtained from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation a list of 24 properties allegedly linked to a company associated with Abhishek Banerjee and said those properties would be investigated.
On Monday, the Chief Minister also reiterated that his government was committed to taking strict legal action against those allegedly involved in corruption and misuse of public funds during the previous Trinamool Congress regime.
