
Guwahati, 19 May (HS): For the first time since Independence, the post of Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly may go to a Muslim community legislator, triggering fresh political discussions within the state Congress unit.
Senior Congress leader and MP Gaurav Gogoi is currently holding consultations with party MLAs to decide who will be entrusted with the responsibility of leading the opposition in the Assembly.
Speaking on the development, Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar said that Gogoi has sought opinions from every legislator before taking a final call on the matter. He stated that the party leadership would take an appropriate decision and appoint a suitable person as the Leader of Opposition.
The remarks of the Gauripur MLA have intensified speculation within political circles over who will eventually be chosen for the key post in the Assam Assembly.-----------
