Siliguri, 18 May (H.S.): Siliguri Metropolitan Police achieved a major breakthrough in its anti-narcotics drive after two alleged drug traffickers were arrested with 1.5 kilograms of brown sugar from the PC Mittal Bus Stand area.

The joint operation was carried out by the Special Operation Group (SOG) and Bhakti Nagar Police Station on Monday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Minajur Rahaman and MD Sagir. Police have registered a case against both under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and initiated further investigation.

According to preliminary investigation, Minajur Rahaman had allegedly brought the consignment of brown sugar from Malda to Naxalbari. From there, he, along with his associate MD Sagir, travelled on a motorcycle to the PC Mittal Bus Stand area to deliver the narcotics.

Police said the duo was waiting for a customer when the raiding team conducted the operation and caught them red-handed.

Investigators are now trying to trace the larger drug trafficking network and identify other individuals linked to the racket.

Police sources said the state government has directed strict action against narcotics trafficking. Recently, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista also held a meeting with the Siliguri Metropolitan Police Commissioner and stressed the need to make the city drug-free and intensify action against traffickers.

Following the meeting, a special anti-narcotics task force was constituted by the police.
