Hooghly, 18 May (H.S.): The police in Serampore have arrested three persons, including a secretary of the INTTUC, on charges of extortion, fraud and several other serious offences.
During a press conference held on Monday, DCP(Serampore) Arnab Biswas confirmed the arrests and said non-bailable charges had been filed against the accused. The police have sought 10 days’ custody for further investigation.
The case dates back to 2024. Gobinda Mondal, father of Akash Mondal, a resident of Ward No. 26 under Rajyadharpur Gram Panchayat in Serampore, died while on duty at the West Bengal Co-operative Spinning Mill. Following his death, the mill authorities announced compensation of Rs 18 lakh for the family.
According to the complaint, some mill employees and INTTUC leaders allegedly demanded Rs 6 lakh from Akash Mondal in exchange for facilitating the compensation payment. The accused allegedly collected an advance amount of Rs 25,000 in two installments. However, despite the payment, the victim’s family never received the promised compensation amount.
Akash Mondal had earlier approached the police, but no effective action was taken at that time. After the change in government, he lodged a fresh complaint.
Acting on the complaint, police conducted raids in the Rajyadharpur area and arrested INTTUC secretary Prabir Mondal, former secretary Sheikh Rabial and mill employee Prasenjit.
DCP Arnab Biswas said the accused were being produced before the Serampore court and that the investigation into the case is ongoing.
