Guwahati, 18 May (HS): Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia has dismissed rumours about him joining the BJP and contesting from the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, calling them completely baseless and part of a larger conspiracy.
Saikia clarified that he remains firmly with the Congress party and there is no question of leaving the party or contesting any by-election. He said attempts are being made by certain sections to push him out of Assam politics, but such efforts would fail.
The opposition leader stated that he has always raised his voice for the interests of the people of Assam and would continue to do so. Expressing concern over the current political environment, he alleged that democracy is under threat and criticised the functioning of the Election Commission.
He also pointed to the sharp rise in prices of essential commodities after the elections, saying the common people are facing severe hardship due to inflation. According to Saikia, the government should focus on resolving public issues instead of indulging in what he described as politics of false promises and fake narratives.
Taking an indirect swipe at the Chief Minister, Saikia said some people describe him as a “Chanakya”, but the principles of Chanakya advocate respect for educated individuals and responsible use of public funds, which, he claimed, are missing in the present administration.
He further alleged that the government is working in favour of capitalists while ordinary citizens are bearing the burden of rising prices and economic difficulties. Saikia asserted that the Congress party’s fight for the people of Assam would continue and truth would ultimately prevail.---------
