Kolkata, 18 May (H.S.): A high-level virtual meeting between the Centre and the West Bengal government was held on Monday to review the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission, Ganga pollution control measures, and water conservation projects in the state. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari participated in the meeting along with Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil, Union Minister of State V. Somanna, and senior officials from both the Centre and the state government.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on ongoing projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission in West Bengal, drinking water supply systems, rainwater harvesting initiatives, Ganga pollution prevention measures, and sewage treatment plant (STP) projects.

Union Minister C. R. Patil stated that the Centre is considering an allocation of approximately ₹2,775 crore for West Bengal in the 2026-27 financial year. However, the release of funds will depend on compliance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) conditions and the progress of project implementation.

Special emphasis was laid on accelerating drinking water projects in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Purulia districts. The Centre also highlighted the need for the early resolution of discrepancies in Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), expenditure related to cancelled or duplicate projects, and pending Apex Committee reports.

The meeting also reviewed the status of sewage treatment plant construction aimed at preventing pollution in the Ganga. The Union Minister noted that several projects had been delayed due to land shortages. In response, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed the administration to take immediate necessary steps and assured effective action to curb Ganga pollution.

Discussions also focused on promoting rainwater harvesting and transforming the “Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari” campaign into a mass movement. District administrations were urged to expedite water conservation-related work before the onset of the monsoon.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said that the West Bengal government would work in coordination with the Centre to ensure safe drinking water supply, environmental protection, and sustainable water management in the state. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing safe drinking water to every household.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Union Jal Shakti Minister assured full cooperation to the West Bengal government and conveyed his best wishes for the state’s development.
