Kolkata, 18 May (H.S.): The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal has initiated fresh action in connection with the 2021 post-poll violence cases, registering 181 new FIRs and launching 458 fresh inquiries so far.
In addition, 59 cases that had previously been closed after submission of final reports have now been reopened for further investigation.
A senior CID officer said on Monday that legal action was being taken in accordance with procedure based on complaints related to the post-poll violence.
The officer stated that the agency was also re-examining cases in which final reports had earlier been filed and investigations were closed.
“So far, 59 such cases have been reopened and fresh investigations have begun. The process is continuing,” the officer said.
The 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal had triggered major political controversy after allegations of attacks, intimidation, arson and displacement of people surfaced from several districts following the announcement of the Assembly election results.
Significantly, earlier this week, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari told the state Assembly that around 12,500 FIRs related to post-poll violence after the 2021 Assembly elections had been registered. He had also announced that all such cases would be reinvestigated and action would be taken against the accused.
