Kolkata, 18 May (H.S.):
After remaining untraceable for a long period, Biswajit Poddar on Monday finally appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office at Salt Lake for questioning in connection with the Rabindra Sarobar case.
Investigating agencies had been searching for him since his name surfaced in the case in February. Although he occasionally appeared live on social media during this period, he had managed to stay out of reach of investigators.
While entering the ED office on Monday, journalists asked him whether he feared arrest. Responding to the question, Poddar said, “I have done nothing wrong.”
The case is linked to alleged irregularities surrounding Rabindra Sarobar, in which the name of Sona Pappu had earlier surfaced. In April, the ED conducted raids at Sona Pappu’s residence and recovered nearly Rs 2 crore in cash. Officials also seized a luxury car and documents related to multiple properties.
According to ED sources, several FIRs have been registered against Sona Pappu. He has been accused of extortion, issuing threats and involvement in other criminal activities. The agency claims that several syndicates operating in the Kasba and Ballygunge areas were allegedly under his control.
In connection with the same case, Shantanu Sinha Biswas of Kolkata Police was arrested over allegations of links with the syndicate network.
ED officials are currently questioning Biswajit Poddar regarding financial transactions, alleged illegal assets and the operation of the syndicates.
