Hooghly, 17 May (H.S.): The police arrested Trinamool Congress councillor Raju Parui alias Chonde of Ward No. 4 of Baidyabati Municipality in connection with an alleged assault on BJP workers during the election campaign last month.
According to the police, the councillor was arrested over allegations of attacking BJP workers on April 26 during campaigning ahead of the Assembly polls.
The accused was produced before a court in Serampore on Sunday, which remanded him to 14 days’ judicial custody.
Before being taken to court from Serampore police station, Parui told reporters that a “false case” had been lodged against him.
He alleged that police arrested him in a politically motivated case after the change of government in the state.
“After the government changed, I was arrested in a false case,” the councillor claimed.
The incident has triggered political reactions in the area, while the police said an investigation into the matter was underway.
