Hooghly, 17 May (H.S.): Bhaskar Bhattacharya, MLA from Serampore, on Sunday said he would push for the establishment of a medical college centred around Serampore Walsh Hospital and also seek university status for the historic Serampore College.
Bhattacharya made the remarks while attending a programme organised by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at Rishra Sevak Sangh in Rishra in Hooghly district.
The BJP legislator said that with a “double-engine government” now in place in West Bengal, he was hopeful that major initiatives in the fields of education and healthcare would be taken soon.
“We want Serampore Walsh Hospital to be upgraded into a medical college. At the same time, efforts will be made to establish the historic Serampore College as a university,” Bhattacharya said.
During the programme, Hindusthan Samachar asked the MLA about cases related to the communal violence that took place in Rishra in 2023.
Responding to the query, Bhattacharya alleged that several youths had been falsely implicated in riot-related cases and continued to face difficulties.
He said a list of such youths had been sought and the matter would be reviewed.
“It will be ensured that innocent youths are freed from the stigma of the riots and get justice,” the MLA said.
