Tamil Nadu set for cabinet expansion ahead of assembly session
Vijay

Chennai, 16 May (H.S.):Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is expected to initiate a major expansion of his cabinet in the coming days as the newly formed government begins preparations for an extended Assembly session and moves to consolidate political support within the ruling camp. The exercise is likely to become one of the first major political steps after the formation of the State’s new administration.

Having assumed office on May 10, Vijay began his tenure with a compact ministry of nine ministers alongside him, including senior leaders N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna and K.A. Sengottaiyan. However, with the administration now moving into its next phase, political discussions have shifted towards accommodating alliance partners and groups that played a role in helping the government secure a working majority.

The issue of wider political representation has gathered momentum following Vijay's earlier commitment that supporting parties and groups would receive an appropriate role in governance. That assurance, made during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s first major convention at Vikravandi, is now expected to shape the contours of the proposed cabinet reshuffle.

Political sources indicate that the Congress party, which extended support to the government after the Assembly election, may receive two ministerial positions in the expanded cabinet. At the same time, the S.P. Velumani-led faction that broke away from AIADMK and later backed the Vijay government is also expected to be accommodated.

Reports suggest the Velumani faction could receive representation through multiple ministerial positions, while other supporting groups are also pressing for a share in the administration. Consultations between the Chief Minister and alliance leaders are understood to be progressing, with efforts underway to finalise names and portfolio allocations.

Political observers expect the ministry strength to eventually rise to around 34 members, with TVK retaining control over major portfolios while ensuring a balance between political commitments and governance priorities.

Following the cabinet expansion, the government is expected to enter its first full Assembly session beginning with the Governor's address, before taking up discussions on the motion of thanks and presenting the State Budget for 2026–27, which is likely to outline the Vijay administration’s broader policy direction and development agenda.
