New Delhi, 16 May (H.S.):

In a major crackdown against narcotics, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has seized Captagon worth Rs 182 crore, a substance that has reportedly been described as a “jihadist drug.” The operation was code-named “Operation Respill.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted on X that the Modi government has taken a resolve to build a “drug-free India.” He said the NCB has, for the first time, seized Captagon valued at Rs 182 crore. He added that the consignment was bound for the Middle East. One foreign national has also been arrested in connection with the seizure.

He said the operation was an example of the policy of zero tolerance towards drugs. India will not allow its territory to be used in any way as a transit route for drug trafficking. He congratulated NCB officials for their alertness and bravery.

It is noteworthy that Captagon is a synthetic stimulant whose chemical name is fenethylline. It was developed in the 1960s for the treatment of conditions such as attention disorders and narcolepsy. Later, due to its addictive nature and the risk of misuse, it was banned internationally.

It has been referred to as a “jihadist drug” because of its alleged use by some terrorist organizations. It reduces fatigue and makes a person feel more bold, aggressive and fear-free. There have been allegations of its use in war and violent activities. However, it should be noted that “jihadist drug” is not a scientific term, but a commonly used label.
