
Guwahati, 16 May (HS): Lok Bhavan Assam on Saturday celebrated the Statehood Day of Sikkim at its conference hall in Guwahati as part of the nationwide “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” initiative aimed at fostering cultural unity and strengthening inter-state ties.
Addressing the gathering, Lakshman Prasad Acharya conveyed his greetings to the people of Sikkim and described the Himalayan state as a symbol of peace, progress and environmental consciousness. He said Sikkim has set a benchmark in sustainable development by becoming India’s first fully organic state and successfully balancing economic advancement with ecological preservation.
The Governor also highlighted the state’s achievements in eco-tourism, organic farming and the pharmaceutical sector. Recalling his tenure as Governor of Sikkim, Acharya said the simplicity of the people and their deep respect for nature remain among his most treasured memories.
Emphasising the role of women in nation-building, he said Sikkim has presented inspiring examples in promoting women’s participation in education, entrepreneurship, self-help groups and public life. According to him, women empowerment is essential for ensuring inclusive growth and building a progressive society.
Referring to the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”, the Governor said India’s strength lies in its unity amid diversity and stressed the importance of encouraging younger generations to understand and appreciate the traditions and cultural heritage of different states.
The programme was attended by Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor SS Meenakshi Sundaram, Assistant Resident Commissioner of Sikkim Jashoda Chettri, along with representatives from Sikkim and officials and staff members of Lok Bhavan.
