Thiruvananthapuram, 30 April (H.S.):Jubilant scenes erupted in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) camp after exit polls for the Kerala Assembly elections projected a decisive edge for the alliance, raising hopes of a return to power after a decade in opposition.

Almost all major survey agencies have forecast a clear advantage for the UDF in the 140-member Assembly, where 71 seats are required for a simple majority. The projections suggest that the UDF is well within striking distance of forming the next government, marking a significant shift in the state’s political trajectory.

Among the most favourable predictions, Axis My India has estimated the UDF’s tally between 78 and 90 seats, indicating a comfortable majority. Similarly, CNN-News18 projects the UDF to win 70–80 seats, while the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is expected to secure 58–68 seats. The BJP-led NDA is likely to remain on the margins with 0–4 seats.

Other polls also reinforce the UDF’s lead. Times Now-JVC predicts 72–84 seats for the alliance, while NDTV and People’s Pulse surveys estimate 75–85 seats. PMARQ places the UDF at 71–79 seats, and Matrize projects 70–75 seats. Today’s Chanakya also forecasts a UDF victory with 72–80 seats.

The LDF, however, remains hopeful of retaining power, banking on its governance record and welfare initiatives to overcome anti-incumbency. The NDA, meanwhile, is aiming to expand its footprint and improve its vote share in select constituencies.

The exit poll results come as the state awaits the final verdict, with counting scheduled for May 4. The elections, held on April 9, witnessed a strong voter turnout, reflecting heightened political engagement.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, most exit polls had accurately predicted the LDF’s return to power. Whether the current projections hold true will be known when votes are counted in the coming days.
