Sonitpur (Assam), 27 April (HS): Police have arrested four individuals from Sonitpur district for allegedly duping a senior citizen by posing as employees of a circle office and promising assistance in land registration.

According to police sources, the case came to light after a 70-year-old resident of Kachutoli lodged a complaint stating that he was cheated by a person who falsely claimed to be associated with the Sonapur Circle Office. The accused reportedly collected ₹17,260 from the victim over a month on the pretext of facilitating land registration before cutting off all contact.

During the investigation, officials verified that no such person was employed at the circle office, confirming the case as one of deliberate impersonation and fraud. Acting on the complaint, the police’s EGPD team launched a probe and traced the accused to Tezpur in Sonitpur district.

Subsequently, four persons were apprehended during the operation. They have been identified as Riyazul Islam (22), Saiful Islam (26), Mozamil Haque (40) and Istakul Hussain (21). Police have initiated legal proceedings against the accused under relevant sections of law.---------
