
Guwahati, 27 April (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma paid heartfelt tributes to noted educationist, economist and pioneer of quiz culture, Professor Dilip Kumar Barua, on his death anniversary.
Taking to social media, Dr. Sarma remembered the eminent personality born in Sipajhar, stating that Prof. Barua had dedicated his entire life to the development of education in Assam. He also highlighted Barua’s pioneering role in popularising quiz culture in the state.
The Chief Minister noted that his contributions in the fields of education, intellectual thought, and social service would remain deeply etched in Assam’s legacy. He added that Barua’s ideals and vision would continue to inspire future generations to pursue knowledge and academic excellence.
Prof. Dilip Kumar Barua, born on March 16, 1943, was a distinguished teacher, writer, and economist from Assam. Widely regarded as a logician and quiz master, he is often credited as the father of quiz culture in the state.
He was born in Sipajhar in Darrang district and spent his early years in Shillong, where he completed his matriculation. He pursued higher education at St. Anthony’s College, Cotton College, and the University of Delhi. In 1966, he joined Cotton College as a lecturer in the Department of Economics and later retired as the principal of Haflong College in 2001.
Notably, he organised the first quiz competition in Assam and the Northeast at Cotton College in 1967. Prof. Barua passed away on April 27, 2017, at a private hospital in Guwahati.----------
