Hooghly, 26 April (H.S.):The district administration in Hooghly has stepped up security measures ahead of the second phase of polling, warning of strict action against anyone attempting to disrupt the process. Several suspected troublemakers have already been taken into custody, while others have been directed to report daily to local police stations.

Addressing a joint press conference on Sunday, District Magistrate Khurshid Ali Kaderi and Chandannagar Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Yadav outlined the measures being taken to ensure free and fair elections.

The District Magistrate said that only valid voters will be allowed within a 100-metre radius of polling stations on the day of voting, and any form of gathering will be prohibited. Carrying mobile phones inside polling booths has been strictly banned. Voters will have to deposit their phones outside before entering, failing which legal action may be taken.

He further stated that party camps must be set up at least 200 metres away from polling booths, with not more than two to three people allowed at such camps. Surprise checks will also be conducted at hotels and lodges to prevent outsiders from staying in the area and causing disturbances.

Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Yadav said that a list of identified troublemakers has been prepared at all police stations. Individuals with a history of involvement in past election-related violence or criminal activities have been warned. So far, 28 people have been taken into custody, while 172 others have been asked to report daily to local police stations and have submitted written undertakings to maintain peace.

He added that route marches, which have been ongoing since the announcement of polls, have now been intensified. Mobile patrolling has also been increased. As per Election Commission guidelines, restrictions have been imposed on bike movement—except for emergencies—from 6 pm on the eve of polling till 6 am on polling day. Unnecessary gatherings have also been prohibited.

The administration reiterated its commitment to ensuring peaceful and orderly polling, with strict monitoring in place across the district.
