Bhubaneswar, 26 April (H.S.) : The 134th birth anniversary of noted Odia leader and former ruler Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deo was observed by the Utkal Sammilani in Bhubaneswar.
Floral tributes were offered at his statue at AG Square at around 9 am. Later, a commemorative meeting was held at the organisation’s central office auditorium in Unit-6.
The meeting was chaired by Vice-President Prof. Surendra Nath Mohanty, while General Secretary Dr. Radhanath Praharaj conducted the proceedings. Speakers highlighted the Maharaja’s pro-people leadership and his significant contribution to the formation of Odisha as a separate state.
They recalled his persistent efforts in presenting a strong case at the Round Table Conferences in London, advocating for the inclusion of Odia-speaking regions under the Madras Presidency into Odisha. These efforts ultimately contributed to the formation of the state in 1936.
Participants expressed concern that despite his pivotal role, Maharaja Gajapati has not received the level of recognition and prominence he deserves. They urged the government to take appropriate steps to honor and promote his legacy.
Several members and office bearers of the organisation attended the event. Engineer Jitendra Kumar Padhi delivered the vote of thanks at the conclusion of the programme.
